THE 'NIGHTY NIGHT BABY' CARDINAL APPOINTED TO GET PN'S NEW BISHOP

"Nighty night, baby, I love you."

Is Palmerston North Diocese stranded between the devil and the deep blue sea? With Bishop Drennan long gone in disgrace, we're now led by Cardinal Call Me John - who yesterday offered Ardern, Little&Co, Dealers in Death, the use of our church foyers for vaccinating sheeples.

But: any new bishop will be appointed with guidance from the churchman who a few years ago infamously, accidentally, broadcast the message above on Twitter.

Cardinal Joseph Tobin - perhaps being questioned about  his tweet

Cardinal Joseph Tobin (above) has just been appointed by Jorge Bergoglio as one of his key advisers on the Vatican's Congregation for Bishops, whose task is to assist the pope in appointing new bishops (his most important task, according to St Robert Bellarmine) but which seems from Palmerston North's perspective to have taken a back seat to Iraq, where the Muslims rejoiced at his surrender to Islamic supremacy. Iraq: Pope’s Trip Leaves Collateral Damage (churchmilitant.com)

But let's look at Bergoglio first, through the lens of Milo Yiannopolous, famous British author and journalist. Baptised and raised a Catholic, this week he declared his self-consecration to St Joseph and his intention to practice the Catholic faith with integrity.

Milo Yiannopoulos

“(Pope Francis) is personally responsible for enough wickedness in this Church that I quake for the future of the Magisterium if he if he's not replaced relatively soon,”  Yiannopoulos says.
But Yiannopoulos has not returned to the Church with his eyes wide shut. He did, after all, publish in 2018 a book entitled Diabolical: How Pope Francis Has Betrayed Clerical Abuse Victims Like Me — and Why He Has to Go

“I consider the cover-up, the systematic, purposeful, deliberate cover-up on an industrial scale, of abuses to be equal in magnitude and moral horror to the abuses themselves,” the author told LifeSite editor-in-chief John-Henry Westen.

“Pope Francis has now, as a matter of record, been responsible for some of these cover-ups.”

This is, Yiannopoulos declared, “a uniquely awful situation” in which “the heir to St. Peter lost his moral and spiritual authority.”

“By rehabilitating Theodore McCarrick,” the author continued, by perpetuating the cover-up and in lies about clerical abuse. In defending priests who describe victims as ‘hysterical’ and all the rest of it. The stuff he did as an archbishop: just unspeakable.”

Yiannopoulos said that he was “very uncomfortable” with the Argentinian pontiff’s Peronist, press-pleasing style and what it has done to the reputation of the Church. But it is the alleged complicity with abuse that the author finds “unforgiveable"

"We know enough, even though we don't know everything, to know that there are such deep and horrifying problems with this pope.”“But we're in an impossible situation where the only right answer seems to be to ride out the storm,” Yiannopoulos concluded.

“I hold this pope personally responsible for a lot of the worst things that have happened in the church politically, to do with abuse, and also China,” he continued.

“He is personally responsible for enough wickedness in this church that I quake for the future of the Magisterium if he if he's not replaced relatively soon."

Pressed on the idea that Francis’ actions are “unforgiveable,” Yiannopoulos modified his condemnation of the pontiff, but only slightly.

“’Unlikely to be forgiven’ is perhaps more accurate, since I don't think that the man is capable of the kind of introspection, self-awareness and contrition that would be necessary for real forgiveness,” the author said.

So this 'unforgivable' Bergoglio has appointed this Cardinal Tobin to the Congregation for Bishops which is charged with the task of choosing Palmerston North's next bishop.

Faced with an eruption in the media over his somewhat embarrassing tweet, +Tobin maintained that it was meant for his sister.

Now, I don't have any sisters but if I had one I very much doubt I'd ever have sent her such a message. And I know for sure that not one of my five brothers would ever have tweeted me thusly.

Father Brian W Harrison O S asks the burning question: why, your Eminence, has your sister not confirmed that it was she to whom you sent that text? Surely, if she were the 'baby' so texted, and if you enjoyed such a close relationship, she'd have rushed to your defence, and to the defence of the Church, whose reputation was so damaged by the media's gossipy inferences.

But the cardinal's sister stayed shtum. Her silence might be termed discreet, as denying her involvement would have put her brother in an even more embarrassing position; but we can assume more from her non-comms than that. The cardinal sent that tweet to someone else.

"We may reasonably hypothesize," says Fr Harrison, "that she didn't want to throw her brother under the bus by publicly calling him a liar. But neither was she going to tell a lie herself by confirming his story in order to cover up his highly questionable relationship with someone else. So she just kept quiet.

You may say that in charity we should accept Cardinal Tobin's explanation. But in charity for the Church and Her Spouse Jesus Christ, who has suffered so much from betrayal by sexual deviation in her clergy, we should ask why Bergoglio, in his (rejected) role as Vicar of Christ, has appointed such a man - who even if he is whiter than snow has been proven indiscreet and imprudent at the very least - to such a high office in the Church?

As if that weren't enough, Cardinal Joseph Tobin is advocating for female cardinals.

In a New York Times interview published December 22, the head of the Newark, New Jersey diocese said he finds no "compelling theological reason why the pope couldn't name a woman cardinal."

"I've been waiting 25 years for this," said self-professed homosexual Thomas M. Smith

"I'm a deacon in the church and I've had to be careful. And afraid."

Does Cardinal Tobin sound like a man we may rely on to advise appointing a holy priest as bishop for Palmerston North? Or may we in the diocese look forward to scenes such as this, below?

So our dependence on Bergoglio, +Tobin and the Vatican's Congregation for Bishops may fairly be called 'the deep blue sea'. On the other hand, the 'devil' lurks in what's going on in the diocese in the absence of a bishop, under the jurisdiction of Cardinal Dew and his new Coadjutor Archbishop, Paul Martin SM.

Speaking of SM, in Napier (a Marist stronghold) last we heard, Communion on the tongue was not allowed. That's a direct contravention of canon law. I tried to verify the No Communion on the Tongue biz on the parish website - which referred me to the Diocesan website which has had nothing to say since June 2020.

St Patrick's Napier - and that's when it was new

Nothing is said in the Napier Parish newsletter either about Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. Apparently there is precisely none.

St Augustine, however, has plenty to say about Adoration.

"The Lord walked here in the very flesh. He has given His flesh for our salvation. No one eats this flesh without first ADORING it. And not only is our Adoration no sin, but we SIN if we fail to ADORE."

But Napier's Marist parish priest, Fr Barry Scannell, has other things on his mind. Like raising money for a new 'Parish Administration and Mission Centre'. Apparently Napier parish is more in need of admin and tourists than a new church to replace St Patrick's, which is so undersized that the Sacred Heart College end-of-year Mass is held in the Anglican catheral. So help me God.

Then there's 'Palmy', where Father Joe Grayland has all three city parishes - cathedral, St Mary's, Our Lady of Lourdes - corralled. Following his OLOL survey plan for Easter celebrations, a parishioner felt moved to alert certain persons of influence thusly:

"St Mary's will be involved in the discussions regarding the survey OLOL distributed in order to formulate a plan for the Easter services.
"Please remember that there was an exodus of sorts a couple of years ago, of many parishioners leaving OLOL for St Mary's for reasons of orthodoxy. These parishioners will not have had a say in the survey, which may mean that the results in no way reflect what  they would agree with. This is the problem with surveying a small group of people and then generalising across groups. There are reasons beyond mere geography that result in one congregation at OLOL and another at St Mary's etc. To assume the results of an OLOL survey could be  'representative' of St Mary's parishioners' wishes would be hazardous at best."

The current Cathedral Parish newsletter ('Kotahi Ano' if you know what that means) features a paean of praise to some idol called 'Mother Earth'. That's idolatry. Heresy. From start to finish of this dismal publication there is no mention, except in the titles of parish churches, of our real Mother, the Blessed Virgin Mary, Queen of Heaven and Earth.

If you have a nasty taste in your mouth after reading through this litany of latterday Judases, lighten up with this inspiration from a Rad Trad wag in Palmy:

"I think using the churches for vaccinations is a great idea, we could go up for Communion and get a jab at the same time. Or perhaps a jab instead of Communion. Or perhaps if we have the jab we will get Communion on the tongue as a reward. Or perhaps a jab as punishment if we kneel.  Endless possibilities.

And if you're still feeling queasy, you should watch this:

  1. Oh dear the Palmerston North Diocese is really in trouble. Really had to giggle at your last paragraph...A good read Julia, but so upsetting..Keep praying the Rosary and asking Our Blessed Mother to come to the aid of the Palmerston North Diocese and to send a Holy Bishop and not a political one.

  3. I say:
This comment from 'Soul of my Saviour (General Parishioner) came by email a few days ago. It's pertinent to this discussion:
"Our Sunday sermon for the 2nd Sunday of Lent, in the PN Cathedral, was based on the general import of Senate of Priests meeting last week with Cardinal Dew and Fr. Calder S.J.
The sentiments expressed were 'everyone has a mission, everyone can do something, everyone has something to contribute.
    Agreed in principle.
In practice, where is this going ?
It is very similar to the language used in the Wellington Diocese over the last 20 years, which gave that Diocese the 'Launch Out' programme. This programme produces lay leaders who 'govern-lead' pastoral areas. Priests are often effectively under these 'leaders'.
We had the same philosophy here, but under Bishop Peter (Cullinane), it did not proceed in quite the same 'organised' way.
Now, however, Palmerston North is at a bridge between bishops. Why has the Church suddenly stalled on the selection of our next bishop and appointed instead, an administrator (Rev. Fr. Butler - under the Archbishop of Wellington)?
Is it because 1: there is a plan now to run the PN Diocese from Wellington
and 2: Is this because PN is to be brought fully into the pattern established in Wellington, of lay-led pastoral areas? In which the priests are sometimes dominant and sometimes not!?
In a nutshell, last week's priests' meeting was a blind that covers the fact that a bishop is not in fact being selected for Palmerston North.
If a new Bishop is being selected, why don't they appoint said man and let him get on with leading the Diocese in the way Christ inspires him to lead it?
Is it really because they want to ensure that we have Wellington's pattern firmly ensconced before a new bishop is appointed?"

  4. There is Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament 4pm to 5pm every Wednesday in St Mary's, Taradale, Catholic Parish of Napier. This used to be advertised in the parish newsletter but you are right, there is no notice about it now - I hadn't noticed that.
