GRAYLAND GUNNING FOR THE HOLY SONS, LATIN MASS

Carols and Midnight Holy Mass at the FSSR's Oratory, Christchurch.

Dr Joe Grayland, liturgical theologian, has rushed with indecent haste to join a fireman, Newshub, Paddy Gower and sundry anonymous complainants in the FSSR exorcism pile-on. +Grayland questions why "fringe groups" such as the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer are tolerated.

But Catholics who adhere to the Deposit of Faith may well question why fringe theologians such as Dr Grayland are tolerated. "(The Sons) do not belong to the mainstream of the Church," opines Dr Grayland (he prefers his academic honorific to his priestly title). You yourself, Dr Grayland, by your theological speculations published at Cathnews evidently do not belong to the mainstream of the Church which flourished and nourished Catholics for over two millennia - until the cataclysm of Vatican II which was subverted by fifth-columnist prelates imported into the Church to drive her off-course and onto the rocks of mass apostasy.

+Grayland doesn't hesitate to declare his purpose: the Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer "do not follow the ordinary form of the Mass promulgated by Pope Paul VI in 1969 (Novus Ordo)."https://cathnews.co.nz/2023/11/20/liturgical-theologian-supports-bishop-gielen/ No indeed. We should think not. The Sons celebrate the traditional Latin "Mass of Ages" which over the centuries produced all the saints - the glory of the Church - but which is now discovered by Pope Francis to be an abomination to be abolished.

Pope Francis, the Vatican hierarchy and "everyone" knew about the pervert sodomite Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, who went about deflowering seminarians for years and the scandal after scandal which has marked this pontificate; but the pope preferred to focus his attention on the Latin Mass and its abolition.  (He obviously had hoped the Tridentine Mass was dead but it won't lie down and he won't give up.) Pope Francis has made many appointments to the hierarchy, most egregiously that of 'Tucho' Fernandez to lead the Dicastery for the Doctrine of the Faith, who collectively are known as the 'Lavender Mafia'.

Faithful Catholics are sick of this treason. Most notable among those faithful of course, is Bishop Joseph Strickland, lately of Tyler, Texas, whose fate of eventual firing was sealed many years ago by his public condemnation of the hierarchy's protection of McCarrick. For his heroic defence of the Truth, +Strickland is surely the first to be added to the martyrology of the Church post-Vatican II. And how many US bishops are squirming with shame because they were too afraid of the woke ideologists to kneel with +Strickland when he led prayer in protest at the not-so-artful Dodgers' support of the blasphemous Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence

Bishop Strickland protests against the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence

Rome has lost the Faith and with it, all credibility. In New Zealand even, what credibility can be afforded a Church which allows a female principal and deputy-principal of a Catholic school (St Patrick's, Te Awamutu) to be "married" to each other, and where the bishop stands by admitting his powerlessness, while the school children know all about it and parishioners stand in church on a Sunday to applaud the unhappy couple?

Bishop Michael Gielen - inherited a conundum

Pity poor Bishop Michael Gielen, who's inherited from his predecessor, Bishop (now Archbishop) Paul Martin, the horrible conundrum of amalgamating city parishes, and organised protest against same, and who's resorted to faithless Rome to sort it out, in addition to investigating the FSSR and the accusations of exorcisms which Father Michael Mary denies.

What it boils down to is an aggrieved parishioner with a long-standing personal grudge against the Holy Sons, who two years ago laid a complaint to police, who concluded there was 'nothing to be found here', who then attracted media attention, as you would, just by dropping the word, exorcism, into the ear of any Michael Morrah or Paddy Gower-type journo. And bingo! You've got the attention of the likes of Father Grayland.

With the whiff of traditional Catholic blood and the demise of the Latin Mass in his nostrils, Fr Grayland prefers to believe an anonymous complainant, in an Tv interview run in a Catholic church in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament without the permission of the parish priest, rather than Fr Michael Mary.

In fact +Grayland is baying for blood. "Discipline in these matters is important, not just for the sake of discipline but out of respect for the Pope’s teaching office," says he. As a traditional order The Sons of the Most Holy Redeemer would have the utmost respect for the Pope's teaching office, but they need have no undeserved respect for the pope's teaching, not when it is manifestly unwise, unjust and even cruel. +Grayland is preaching false obedience.

He accuses the Holy Sons of contravening the Church law of 'lex orandi, lex credendi'. Pardon me? That principle is perfectly illustrated by comparing the traditional doctrine and dogma of the Church and the traditional way of praying - the Latin Mass - with the modernist theology of the post-Vatican II Church and its liturgical expression, the shallow, inane, irreverent (but valid!) Novus Ordo. The Holy Sons do not conform to modernist theology, ergo, they do not celebrate the Novus Ordo.

+Grayland may feel comforted now to be joined in battle by the likes of the fairly despised Cardinal Arthur Roche, Prefect of the Dicastery for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, and the papal biographer and pope 'splainer Austen Ivereigh, reported by Cathnews to have tweeted – “The schism is well advanced.

“It began with rejecting Rome in the name of Tradition, looking to a counter-magisterium, seeking an alliance with secular princes (Orban, Trump) and taking refuge in pre-reform liturgy.

“Now it is developing its own martyrology." Liturgical theologian supports Bishop Gielen’s initiative (cathnews.co.nz)

Yes, the schism is well advanced - by the pope himself, who is recognised even by Protestants as straying further and further from the Gospel and the Rock of Peter. Traditional orders, including the Society of St Pius X (SSPX), have never rejected Rome. It is Rome who is rejecting Christ.

As for "seeking an alliance with secular princes", Ivereigh makes himself ridiculous. What are the succession of global elites constantly entertained by Pope Francis at the Vatican - Obama, Clinton, Bezos, Biden - if not "secular princes"?

And the FSSR cannot be said to be 'taking refuge in pre-reform liturgy' which they have never left. The expression 'pre-reform liturgy' unwisely invites comparison with pre-Reformation liturgy which of course was the Latin Mass, and the 'reform' (the Novus Ordo) with the Reformation which signified the Deformation of the Church.

And yes, with the firing of Bishop Strickland, a martyrology could be said to be developing but it is not "its own" but the Martyrologium Romanum of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church.

Father Joseph Grayland, Cardinal Arthur Roche and pope 'splainer Ivereigh may be on the right side of the Vatican now but may one day find themselves on the wrong side - of history almost certainly, but infinitely more importantly on the wrong side of Christ who "hath corrected the world, which shall not be moved: he will judge the people with justice" (Ps 95:10).

  1. Very well put. Fr Joe Grayland has no room to speak about anyone in the Church, due to the fact that he himself has paid no heed to the rubrics of the Church, especially where the Mass is concerned. Many lay people in Palmerston North can testify to that fact. I thought Fr Grayland was on a sabbatical. However, he hasn't taken a holiday from using CathNews as a vehicle to promote his liberal theology.

Imagine being called fringe for practising the traditional mass. They’ve never described any rainbow circus mass as “fringe”. What a joke.

  3. Exactly why is Dr Grayland tolerated. As for Paddy Gower he doesn't know what he's talking about. Look how he went about happily harrassing the lady Dr in Kaiapoi. I'll pray for them both.

  4. I was in the Cathedral of the Holy Spirit and saw some familiar faces of the sing praise books from the Latin mass in ashhurst. I don’t think father Joe will be happy with a return of the Latin mass in the cathedral. I for one can not wait for the mass to return. if that is what is going to happen
