In New Zealand's fight for the right to life, why
have Catholics been largely replaced by Protestants?
We know that fearless, mighty warrior for the unborn - the One, Holy,
Catholic and Apostolic Church - has retired from the battle. We know priests rarely give sermons on the sanctity of life. Pro-lifers are grateful to get permission from Father to hand out fliers in the foyer after Mass.
What I didn't realise till today, when three pro-lifers got together in
Havelock North to tie *406 feathers on *406 white crosses, was that while bishops
and priests were being slowly stupefied into a kind of moral inertia by the mindlessness
of the New Mass texts, Protestant evangelists were setting their people on fire
with the revelation of the hideous truth of abortion.
While we cut string and squirted glue we listened to two 20-minute talks from an
American evangelist which as formation for priestly retreats would have left
Joy Cowley's fun-filled ruminations for dead (which they are). Although I doubt they'd have the stamina - Catholics have got used to 5-10 minute 'homilies' - every single one of our
bishops should listen to a few radical Proddy evangelists on the subject of abortion. This one would have made the episcopal hair stand on end. Although orthodox Catholic preachers, of which there are a few on
offer internationally, would of course avoid the howlers I heard today.
One of my companions was a Catholic, which took me back to SPUC days.
The other was my trusty Voice for Life branch treasurer and she happened to
have these talks on her tablet.
If our bishops had heard this stuff or something like it, they could
never have come up with the statement they produced on the passing of the
Abortion Legislation Act, back in the week before Level 4, on the Vigil of the
Annunciation when Ardern et al had frightened us all into a frenzy with the
bogey of Covid.
The NZ Catholic Bishops were 'deeply disappointed'. Were they
perhaps hoping for a more humane method of slaughter, like vets who have to use
anaesthetics to abort calves, a kinder way of killing?
They couldn't even summon the authority to make this statement themselves; they hid behind the skirts of 'a spokesperson', a 'Ms Cynthia Piper, a lecturer for
the Church’s Te Kupenga - Catholic Leadership Institute'.
"The Bishops Conference also believes
the new law will fail many women."
The new law, dear bishops, will fail all women. How could the lawful
murder of her own child ever be a success, for any woman?
"It is in women’s best interests that the
legal pathway to an abortion needs to be robust."
Is this really the Catholic Church speaking? We see the evidence of lack
of faith, of living on the natural plane, in the world - in short, sounding like atheists.
How does it help a woman to provide her with 'a legal pathway to abortion'
that is 'robust'? ABORTION. IS. MURDER. Human life is God's gift; only God can
take it away. The Catholic Church must oppose abortion completely and utterly.
“Neither does this law do anything to reduce the
overall number of abortions, something that a majority of New Zealanders have
consistently said they want."
It's immediately and glaringly obvious that a law that allows babies to
be killed right up to birth, allows dietitians and speech therapists to kill
babies, a law which delivers abortion by courier post, is only going to increase the
number of abortions. That is, unless the evangelising Protestant churches can
succeed in converting minds and hearts to love of God and neighbour (the unborn
being a pregnant woman's closest neighbour) where the Catholic Church has failed.
And whether a
majority of New Zealanders want it or not is a matter for politicians to fret over, not men of God who are concerned surely only with doing His will, not
New Zealanders', be their majority ever so large and vote-winning.
Oh, but then the bishops really lay it on.
They are, "(f)urthermore ... absolutely dismayed that MPs voted down a host of sensible amendments that would have made the new legislation much more compassionate, said Ms Piper."
Absolutely nothing, Ms Piper, can make abortion compassionate. Or sensible.
“These included amendments that would have required babies born alive to be cared for like any other child, a ban on sex selection abortions and a ban on disability discrimination abortions.”
Oh well yes, those amendments would have been nice, wouldn't they? It would have made all the difference if aborted babies weren't left to die, or if you couldn't kill a baby because it was a girl, or because it might turn out to be Down syndrome.
Could I refer the bishops please, to Father Frank Pavone, who says,

"There is a concern among a significant number of
Catholic clergy that it is difficult to preach on abortion because the topic
does not seem to harmonize with the readings assigned for a given
liturgy.
"This concern needs to be addressed from at least two perspectives.
First, the homilist is not constrained by the readings. Second, the Scriptures
do provide countless links with the abortion issue."

Or to Father Jerry Pokorsky:
"When God’s law is clearly violated, we expect priests to stand up in opposition to evil and, as necessary, suffer the consequences.
"The largest number of
imprisoned priests in history—over 2,000—was in the Dachau concentration camp
during World War II, because these priests had opposed the Nazis. On the other
hand, we are disappointed to learn that Nazis and Communists successfully
bullied many priests and bishops into silence.".

The New Zealand Bishops' statement on the clearest possible violation of God's law - the Abortion Legislation Act - was so weak, I'm surprised it could stagger out of poor Ms Piper's pen.
And it didn't take Nazis or Communists but just the kids' version of the latter, mere socialists like Jacinda Ardern and Andrew 'Chicken' Little, to successfully bully all our bishops and priests not just into silence but into solitary confinement as well, during Lockdown. Beware the 'Second Wave'!
Of today's saint, St John Francis Regis SJ, it was said that, "His discourses were without art, but clear to the meanest capacities, and delivered with that emotion of heart, and so moving a tone of voice, that he seemed transported by a divine fire above himself; and all who heard him declared, that "Francis preached the word of God as it is in itself; whereas others seemed, in comparison of him, to preach themselves." His audience usually consisted of four or fire thousand. His provincial in his visitation, hearing him, wept during the whole sermon."
St John Francis Regis, pray for New Zealand's bishops and priests.
