Rome, they say, is preparing to excommunicate holus-bolus the entire Society of St Pius X (SSPX), world-wide. That is, the new bishops due to be consecrated with or without papal mandate on July 1, its priests - and its people: the thousands of faithful Catholics who attend the Traditional Latin Mass celebrated in its 'chapels' - the funeral parlours, garages and sitting rooms to which they've been consigned, as to latter-day Irish Mass rocks, for years, by the Vatican's conciliar, Novus Ordo, Synodal Ape of the Church.
The French newspaper Tribune Chretienne states this will come as a shock to many Catholics who assist at SSPX Masses. Actually, it wasn't even a surprise to the SSPX community gathered today in a garage in rural Hawke's Bay, New Zealand. There, where a young Australian priest called down the Son of God onto a portable altar to the accompaniment of quacking ducks and barking dogs, the mood was one of subdued excitement.
They would be honoured, they said, to be excommunicated by such a 'pope' as Leo and such a prefect of the Dicastery of the Faith as 'Cardinal' Tucho Fernandez. Such an 'excommunication', they said, would carry no weight in the eyes of God and they'd be proud to be blackballed by a Vatican which operates now as an NGO rather than a religion, and whose CEO would be defined by any such draconian, unprecedented action as a tyrant.
The young Australian priest preached a simple sermon on the immutability of God, His power to do "all in heaven and upon earth" (Mt 28:18) and His unfailing help. No mention was made of the episcopal consecrations but the message was clear. On July 1, three weeks before he says his monthly Mass again in that garage, his little flock will quite likely find themselves 'excommunicated'. They will simply continue, like all SSPX Massgoers in Australia and New Zealand, to pray the Rosary every day, as often as possible, for their new bishops and the graces the Church will need to accompany them.
Trad Inc doomsayers are prophesying the desertion of priests and people from the Society but today, as the clouds of persecution darkened, it was standing room only in that garage. More attended - including young Pacifika men with a toddler in tow and the usual travellers from Wairoa - than ever before.
They know that the Church has a canon law which cannot be contradicted by a pope (not even a true pope) on a whim. They know the objections the Society has to the errors of Vatican II and they don't wish to belong to a new world religion which insists on its members adhering to error, which has no rights - least of all to souls who have been lost already by believing that error will be lost eternally in Leo's reign of arbitrariness and ambiguity.
SSPX Massgoers are generally - by contrast with Novus Ordo-ites - well formed by their vastly better formed priests. They suspect Leo's new religion will tell them that attending the SSPX will not fulfil their Sunday obligation, when that same religion makes no such pronouncement on the schismatic Orthodox.
They suspect that what Leo means by "We must move forward" is that his new religion, having excluded all faithful Catholics, will soon radically include sodomites, as in "Todos, Todos, Todos!" (Everyone, Everyone, Everyone!) They know it was Francis/Bergoglio who said it and they know Leo/Prevost is the same heretic, just better-dressed and sweeter-spoken (which makes him all the more a threat to souls).
These SSPX Massgoers gathered today in a garage know that the heroic Bishop Athanasius Schneider (slated to be Stricklanded) was Apostolic Visitator for the Vatican to the SSPX for two years. He found the Society to be "fully Catholic". And they want Leo/Prevost to answer Bishop Schneider's question:
The SSPX Massgoers at that garage in the Hawke's Bay countryside know why they are likely to be excommunicated, and why it would be an honour.
It's because they know and believe the teaching of St Paul, Apostle to the Gentiles: "But though we, or an angel from heaven, preach a gospel to you besides that which we have preached to you, let him be anathema" (Gal 1:8).

According to a June 19 report published by Tribune Chrétienne, the Vatican is reportedly preparing a document in light of the coming Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX) episcopal consecrations, that will not only see its clergy and leadership being designated schismatic (and therefor excommunicated), but also potentially the faithful who regularly attend its chapels.
This will come as a shock for the many Catholics who assist at SSPX Masses, who expected that only the bishops involved in the consecration would be excommunicated.
According to sources cited by Tribune Chrétienne, discussions in apostate Rome are no longer focused solely on the Society’s leadership. The proposed document could reportedly affect the entire structure of the SSPX, including its approximately 700 priests, seminaries, apostolates, and even the faithful who regularly participate in its sacramental life.
If such a measure were enacted, it would represent an historic escalation in the long-running conflict between Rome and the Society founded by Archbishop Marcel Lefebvre.
For decades, many Catholics attending SSPX chapels have considered themselves fully Catholic while seeking to preserve the traditional faith, liturgy, and sacraments. The possibility that these faithful could now be treated as participants in a schismatic body would be unprecedented.
The report follows recent comments by “Pope” Leo XIV regarding the SSPX’s planned priestly ordinations in July. Speaking at Castel Gandolfo, the Pope reportedly expressed concern over what he described as a refusal to accept certain teachings of the Second Vatican Council and warned of the consequences of a further rupture with Rome.
His remarks have been interpreted by many observers as a final “appeal” before stronger canonical measures are taken. But, some have expressed surprise that SSPX leaders have not been granted a direct audience with the “Pope” despite the seriousness of the situation and the potential significance of the upcoming ordinations.
The concerns raised by the report are not limited to the Society itself.
Several traditional communities that remain fully recognized by Rome are reportedly following developments with growing unease. The article points to what many perceive as inconsistent treatment of institutes attached to the traditional liturgy.
Some communities have faced restrictions regarding the celebration of the traditional Mass or the use of traditional ordination rites, while others have received permissions. Critics describe the situation as one marked by uncertainty and arbitrariness, making it increasingly difficult for traditional Catholics to understand Rome’s long-term intentions toward the ancient liturgical heritage of the Church.
The report also notes increasing firmness from Vatican officials such as “Cardinal” Arthur Roche and “Cardinal” Víctor Manuel Fernández, alongside the stance now associated with the usurper, “Pope” Leo XIV.
For many traditional Catholics, the most pressing question now is no longer simply the future of the SSPX, but whether Catholics who wish to preserve the traditional Roman Rite and remain faithful to the Church will continue to have a secure place within the synodal ecclesiastical structures.
The possibility that regular attendance at SSPX chapels could carry severe canonical consequences would mark a significant departure from previous decades of dialogue and accommodation. Such a move would affect countless families who have never regarded themselves as outside the Church and who have sought only to maintain the liturgical and spiritual traditions handed down through the centuries.
Should the reports prove accurate, the weeks following the SSPX ordinations in July could become a decisive turning point in the relationship between Rome and the traditionalist movement worldwide.
