"(Pope)Francis is asking us to unite ourselves on the level of spirit with those who worship idols and demons or who venerate false prophets that deny the divinity of Christ."
I suppose it makes a change from life in Level 2 in Godzone (as if!), running round in circles trying to find a Mass to go to tomorrow, to hear how our Pontiff summonsed us and "believers of every religion to unite themselves spiritually in a day of prayer ... to help humanity overcome the coronavirus pandemic."
The trouble with Pope Francis is, he's so plausible:
"I would like to remind you that on May 14, believers of every religion are invited to unite themselves spiritually in a day of prayer, fasting and works of charity, to implore God to help humanity overcome the coronavirus pandemic," the pontiff announced Tuesday.
It sounds so Christian. So 'nice'. 'Special', even. And on the feast of St Matthias, too. Wait a minute: wasn't Matthias chosen to replace the traitor Judas? And isn't there something treacherous going on here?
As popular British author and journalist Nick Donnelly protested, "the only 'spiritual' union that Christians recognize is the communion of the Holy Spirit with those baptized into the Body of Christ," commenting on Twitter that "I will not be joining this syncretistic effort to create a false 'one world religion."
Theologian Gavin Ashenden lamented the call for "all believers of all religions" to "unite spiritually" as "nothing less than blasphemy for a Christian."
"There are a number of dreadful errors here," the recent convert to Catholicism noted. "First, it makes a distinction between 'all believers' and the rest, who are presumably a mixture of atheists and agnostics — the gnostic error of presuming that anything spiritual is good and non-spiritual is bad, or less good. Jesus does not teach this."
"It makes the second error of presuming that truth does not matter. Jesus taught us that truth consisted in Him alone and His relationship with the Father. But the Committee describes 'God' as 'All-Creator' — superimposing Allah onto Yahweh. Even Wikipedia offers a choice of 135 wholly different notions of Creator God to choose from," Dr. Ashenden, who resigned as Queen's Chaplain in protest at the Koran being read in St. Mary's Cathedral, Glasgow," remarked.
"The Vatican issued its summons on behalf of the Higher Committee of Human Fraternity, an inter-religious body created to implement the initiatives proposed by the Abu Dhabi Declaration signed by Pope Francis and Ahmed el-Tayeb, Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, in February 2019."
'Higher Committee of Human Fraternity', indeed. Does that smack of Freemasonry and the One World Religion, or what?
"Just think for one moment what Francis is asking Catholics to do," says Donnelly. "He's asking us to unite ourselves on the level of spirit with those who worship idols and demons or who venerate false prophets that deny the divinity of Christ. What an appalling thing to ask us to do!
"Of course, we can cooperate on the natural level with people of other religions to combat COVID-19, but union on a spiritual level is completely out of the question. To do so would risk the danger of syncretism — the creation of a false religion that blasphemously attempts to combine Christianity with the beliefs and practices of false and pagan religions. The Pachamama spirit is rearing its ugly head again in the Church. In the name of Jesus Christ, we must reject it."
And while we're supposed to be imploring "the All-Creator" God "to lift his pandemic off us and the entire world", we New Zealanders in particular might do a reality check and ask ourselves, "What 'pandemic'?"
As Father Francois Laisney urged the children at St Anthony's Whanganui yesterday, we need to live in the reality of nature, of our immune systems, of our own antibodies made by God which fight off bugs, not in dreams. (Not in nightmares, I'd have said, but Father was talking to children.)
But he talked to them also about St Thomas Aquinas and proportionality. He talked about isolating the sick, not the healthy.
And what an SSPX priest in Whanganui NZ said to school children has been echoed by a prominent professor of forensic medicine in Hamburg, Germany who states the hysteria over the coronavirus is "completely exaggerated".
Well, yes. Where are the "tens of thousands" of deaths Prime Minister Ardern threatened us with a few weeks ago, if we didn't do what she says? Does anyone really believe that's what would have happened if she hadn't locked us all up? Not Professor Klaus Puschel, head of forensic medicine at the University Medical Centre Hamburg-Eppendorf, I suspect.
Professor Klaus Puschel
Since the so-called pandemic began Professor Klaus Puschel and his team have performed autopsies on those who have died in Hamburg in connection with the coronavirus. According to Püschel, all of the deceased had at least one previous illness. “[E]ven if this sounds harsh,” Püschel said, “they would all have died in the course of this year.”
About 80 percent of the more than 140 people examined suffered from cardiovascular diseases. The average age of the dead is 80 years.
Healthy people should not be afraid of infection: “The fear that this is a killer virus and that many will die from it is completely exaggerated,” said Püschel. “We have to make it clear that we don’t want to be in a glass case. We can’t protect ourselves from everything. And this virus is a comparatively low risk.” The virus is also by no means a death sentence for the elderly and sick. “Most will survive the disease,” said Püschel.
Püschel sees no particular dangers for most people with the novel corona virus: “Especially children, adolescents, the working population will normally survive this disease without damage.”
That is why Püschel also pleads for the opening of daycare centers and schools:
“The general experience is that the children do not get particularly sick, the adolescents do not get particularly sick. There is not even any indication that they are special spreaders.” The population had to live with the virus: “We have to make friends with it in a way, deal with it, like with the flu and with other infections.”The doctor underlined the importance of determining whether patients died of the virus rather than with the virus. Autopsies that were carried out abroad paint a relatively clear picture.
Dr Püschel has addressed the lack of transparency when it comes to including fatalities in the virus toll:
“Insufficient amounts of information about exceptional cases are for example made public." (Like the big story about the 5 year-old who "died of coronavirus" who in fact had an underlying illness.) Some patients who passed away may be classified as coronavirus deaths even though they may have, in reality, died from an unrelated illness.
As the doctor explained, many patients that succumbed to the illness were very old, smokers, obese, or had preexisting conditions such as diabetes. Lifestyle, age, and other illnesses are therefore closely associated with higher risks, he concluded. By examining other organs, autopsies can play a key role in gaining a better understanding of the virus’s mechanisms.

Wanting, Fr Laisney said this morning, to sound positive, he told the St Anthony's school children that they must pray to Our Lady and the saints for the conversion of New Zealand, that "people who make unjust laws against God will repent", so that all might enter into God's own joy in eternity.
"It is worth persevering through this persecution, because God will reward the just and punish the wicked. "Vengeance is mine," says the Lord; "I will repay."
"It is a fearful thing to fall into the hands of the living God."

Philippa O'Neill says:
ReplyDeleteThat's why he has declared war on the Latin Rite... it does not fit with the one world religion. Did you see the awful questions in that questionnaire he sent to the bishops of the world? Particularly the one asking if there was a priest in a parish actively promoting the Latin Mass. How insulting. How base. As a lawyer Paul said they were loaded questions. Makes me ashamed to be Catholic yet again.
Julia du Fresne says:
Yes. Snide, and wicked. But like St Teresa of Avila, I am so happy to be "a daughter of the Church". As she also said, struggling as she did with the Protestant heresy, this life is just "a night in a bad inn". Let's use all the opportunities this Pope gives us to forgive him and our bad bishops, and capitalise on them by our prayer, mortification and self-denial.
Philippa O'Neill says:
Absolutely Julia. They are all men and like us have flaws and make mistakes.
