In a case which has been
compared to the Salem witch hunts, Cardinal George Pell will appeal the verdict
that has found him guilty of sexually abusing choir boys.
His attorney has
stated there is “voluminous evidence” to show “what was alleged was impossible”.
Most of the multiple
accusations originally levelled at him were thrown out in a previous trial,
which resulted in a hung jury after Victorian police leaked information about
their investigation to the Sydney Morning Herald.
Pell, who spear-headed
Australian efforts to “confront the evil of clerical child abuse”, has himself
“emphatically and unequivocally” denied the allegations.
Add to that the fact that Pell is most unpopular in Rome
where Pope Francis, having sent him in to clean up Vatican finances, restricted
Pell’s powers without notice after he proposed reforms for greater transparency
- which were stonewalled.
The case against Cardinal
George Pell has the look of a put-up job.
