When Pope Francis famously said, regarding gay rights, ‘Who am I to judge?’ he was saying nothing
new, and he knew exactly what he was saying: that Christians must learn to judge
the deed (otherwise, how can they tell right from wrong?) but never the doer.
Des Darroch (Points, Dec 31) is absolutely right to urge encouragement for a
pope with such an eye for a headline.
