We’re all suckers for a sob story (My dear friend’s lonely death,
Jan 29) and Joe Bennett tells it well. Trouble is, medical research shows
media coverage such as this can influence suicide rates. And I suspect there are
many more sob stories to be told already, in countries like the Netherlands
where euthanasia is legal, and many more to be told here in New Zealand were
euthanasia to be legalised, by the terminally ill and disabled who have been or
will be pressured to end their lives. But dead men and women tell no
tales.
