 How many women sitting in Catholic church pews in New Zealand today were mourning the loss of their own child or children, grandchild or grandchildren, by abortion? 

Since abortion was legalised in 1977, more than 500,000 babies have lost their lives by abortion. One in five NZ women is now living with the consequences.

Today, the Feast of the Baptism of the Lord, the hymn for the Divine Office sings: 

                            The Spirit of the Lord comes down,

Anoints the Christ to suffering,

To preach the word, to free the bound,

And to the mourner comfort bring.

Before Christ by His Ascension into Heaven left us to our own devices, He instituted His Church to continue His mission of preaching the word of forgiveness and healing, of freeing the bound through the Sacrament of Penance, and bringing comfort to the mourner through His continued Presence in the Blessed Sacrament.

So why does the Church seemingly ignore and abandon these bereft mothers (and fathers) who mourn the babies they've lost - by their own choice, which only aggravates their grief - through induced abortion? Because whether or not they admit it, at some level of consciousness those parents and grandparents and whanau, and our society, suffer grievously. 

But it's almost as if women who've had abortions are moral lepers, with their sickness -  sometimes mortal, leading to suicide - banished from the public square. In the silence which surrounds the issue, especially in the Church, one can hear the tolling of their bells: "Unclean, unclean!"  

The suicide rate of women who had abortions was more than double the suicide rate of women who gave birth. (Incidentally, we may note that the leper had to cover his mouth with a cloth: He shall have his clothes hanging loose, his head bare, his mouth covered with a cloth, and he shall cry out that he is defiled and unclean.(Lev 13:45). 

Seems like in these days of CovidMania the medical 'science' which insists on mask-wearing, even in perfectly healthy individuals, hasn't advanced much since the days of Leviticus.

Just to cheer us up

• Project Rachel, "a confidential ministry for anyone who desires healing after being impacted by abortion" is no longer to be found on Google. 
• P.A.T.H.S. (Post Abortion Trauma Healing Service), "an independent, non-political, non-denominational organisation which is committed to upholding Christian values and attitudes including respect for the dignity and worth of all persons from their earliest beginnings, and all those involved in an abortion scenario" likewise seems to have faded away. 
• Then there's 'Pregnancy Help', which has refused to give an assurance that they do not refer women for abortions. Presumably, Pregnancy Help's 'help' in pregnancy can sometimes mean ending a pregnancy not with new life, but with death.
• As for the Nathaniel Centre, the pro-life showpony for the Catholic Church in New Zealand, this is the sort of rhetoric it produced on the subject of Election 2020's referenda on cannabis use and euthanasia: "The choices we make continually affect and shape the world in which we live, and those choices speak of who we are, what we value, and what our lives are about. Although the relentless and insidious narrative of individualism attempts to permeate all aspects of life, the choices we make can challenge this narrative, enabling us to live in ways that are cognisant of our existence as social beings." Electrifying, what? 
• John Kleinsman, the Nathaniel Centre's director, opines that "These days any single mother who decides to keep her baby is a heroine … even a saint. In these days of increasing infertility (often due to abortions) - and especially on this day which is celebrated in the Latin Mass calendar as the Feast of the Holy Family - one might well say that it's the single mother who decides to offer her baby for adoption to married (hetero) parents unable to conceive who is truly the heroine or saint.

If Church leaders in our day are content with the brotherhood of flesh and blood, with “fratelli tutti” in flesh and blood, they are neglecting God’s commandment in the Gospel, i.e. the commandment to make the members of all nations and religions disciples of Christ, sons in the Only begotten Son of God, brothers in Christ, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, and teaching them to observe all things whatsoever Christ has commanded (see Mt 25:19-20).

 

Such zeal is, for a Christian soul, the deepest expression of love of neighbor: to love him as you love yourself. If your Divine sonship in Christ represents for you the greatest conceivable gift of God — which it truly is — then you lack the true love and charity for your neighbor if you do not burn with the desire to  communicate this gift to him, of course with delicacy and respect.

The new encyclical (Fratelli Tutti) aggravates the naturalism reigning in the Church today, which can be described as a lack of love for the Cross of Christ, for prayer, a lack of awareness of the grievousness of sin and the necessity of reparation. 

• How needed and beneficial it would have been, for the whole of humanity, had Pope Francis proclaimed in this, his social encyclical, what all the Apostles, Church Fathers and Popes had done, declaring to men of all nations and religions this truth:

 “The greatest benefit and happiness is to accept Jesus Christ, God and man, the only Savior and to believe in Him.”

Well, history today records Trump's defeat - a defeat that, in view of Our Lady's prophecies of a world chastisement for sin, just had to happen.

Ashli Babbit RIP

Ashli Babbit, aged 35, was an Air Force veteran who’d served on multiple missions in the Middle East. Her Twitter feed included several photos of herself at pro-Trump rallies wearing a MAGA cap.

Does she look or sound like a mindless rioter? Like one of the BLM mob? She reminds me of a friend in my erstwhile yoga class whom I dubbed 'the rubber woman'. Strange to say, there are no pix of Babbit to be seen in the Dominion Post. Instead we’re fed images like this:

What is the catastrophe that the Blessed Virgin Mary says is about to happen, as a consequence of sin and evil in the world? 

For starters, 2021 has opened with a self-proclaimed Catholic - who wants to kill babies up to birth, who presents himself sacrilegiously for Communion with Christ at Holy Mass, who will receive Communion from a cardinal of the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church, who is applauded by Jorge Bergoglio, the man fraudulently elected to lead the One, Holy, Catholic and Apostolic Church - being declared President of the world's most powerful nation, the USA. 

That’s catastrophe enough for any faithful believer in Christ and His Church.

Who's surprised that rushing today to join UK's Boris Johnson's condemnation of the protest at the Capitol is none other than Cardinal Blase Cupich of Chicago? It “should shock the conscience of any patriotic American and any faithful Catholic,” he said, adding that the “eyes of the world look on in horror”- Cupich himself being, in offering Holy Communion to same-sex couples, about as faithful a Catholic as Martin Luther. 

He has equated racism to COVID-19 and commented that “[r]acism is the red thread that runs through the binding that holds America back from reaching its promise: equality and justice for all.”

If racism is holding America back from that (impossible) promise, your Eminence, it is the Catholic Church who more than any other party is responsible, for failure to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ which saves us all regardless of colour - and regardless of the colour of that tiny Baby who accepted the adoration of the Magi and opened their eyes to His Mystery. 

As for Boris - now unrivalled among world leaders for bad hair - he has "unreservedly condemned" Donald Trump for inspiring the dramatic assault on the Capitol building, making the British Prime Minister the first world leader to directly blame (sic) the United States President for the riot.

May we remind Boris, Stuff and the Demoncrat Party that in the words of Dr Martin Luther King, "a riot is the language of the unheard".

For the supernatural perspective so lacking in all the commentaries, even or especially from the Catholic Church (we anticipate with dread the contribution, sure to come, of Jorge Bergoglio) we may turn to the messages received by Luz de Maria de Bonilla from the Archangel St Michael, from the Blessed Virgin Mary and from Jesus Christ. These messages have an Imprimatur from the Catholic Bishop Juan Abelardo Mata of Nicaragua, who after reading all the content from 2009 to September 2017, and prayer books, found nothing against the Faith or sound doctrine, recommending the reading of the revelations to all Christians.

The times are serious, although those to come will be more so, when what remains of what has been announced in the Revelations given by the Queen of Heaven will be fulfilled. You must prepare yourselves spiritually, firmly maintaining the Faith necessary for you to confirm your Faith in Our and your King and Lord Jesus Christ.

The son of iniquity is sending out orders so that his followers cause instability in the world through direct confrontation with the Divine Law, so that his followers revolt against the Sacraments, rejecting the Divine and accepting what is of man.

This is not atypical and goes a long way towards explaining the nosedive in Mass attendance since Vatican II which Dr Taylor Marshall laments in the US. He points a finger also at the "Peter Paul and Mary" type N O Masses beloved by "bishops in their 60s and 70s" but so disliked by young people, who are flocking instead to parishes featuring  the "ritual, the incense, the mediaeval, Byzantine reverence of the Traditional Latin Mass", where the birth rate is high. No need for words

The Biden Option carries the real possibility that the 78-year-old president, who has shown signs of mental weakness and confusion, might not reach the end of his term. Thus, the radical vice president could well take the place of the “moderate” president. A communistic leader will then rule America following the Democrats’ Marxist platform. Those who sought to avoid radical Marxism by taking the Biden Option might suddenly find themselves in Communism’s nefarious grip.

The Best Option

Regardless of the election outcome, the undeniable fact is that millions of voters took the Biden Option as an easy way out of the present crisis. The possibility for leftist power plays shows that there is no safety in mediocrity. Wishful thinking is not a viable and stable strategy for America’s future.

IN CASE JACKBOOTS ARDERN GETS ANOTHER RUSH OF BLOOD TO THE HEAD ...

Would you say this guy looks a good guy? A nice guy? I reckon. 

His name is Rod Grant. He's headmaster at a 'posh' independent school in Edinburgh, Scotland and he's a bit worked up - for good reason. 

As new coronavirus restrictions come into force across Scotland, in an extraordinary public intervention, Grant told parents two days ago that children were becoming “collateral damage” in a lockdown that was causing a “downward spiral” in their mental health. 

I post this as a heads-up for parents, grandparents and voters generally, just in case Jacinda Jackboots Ardern gets it into her pretty head to go back into Lockdown (as the tom-toms are saying she will).

"In 31 years of teaching, I don’t think I’ve ever felt so despondent and so concerned at the same time. Our world is in the grip of a pandemic and governments across the globe have poured billions of pounds into fighting it and in trying to support the lockdown strategy.

Makes me wonder why we couldn’t tackle other issues globally and so ferociously in terms of spend. What about the Climate Emergency? The obesity pandemic? The fact that in 2021 we still have people living on the street; that it takes an international footballer, Marcus Rashford, to shame the British Government into feeding children during school holidays.

And what does that also tell us about the current levels of poverty in the UK? What about the 1500 people that die every day in the UK from the big three: heart disease, strokes and cancer-related illnesses.

Why haven’t we taken these issues as seriously as we have a virus which is likely to end up with a mortality rate of well below 1%, and which, according to the Office for National Statistics has an average age of death in the UK of 83. Meanwhile, in Glasgow, Scotland’s largest city, men have a life expectancy of 71.

I’m not a conspiracy theorist; I’m not some radical on the fringes of a fringe. I’m just a teacher and this is what I see:

In the last three months, in my school and in schools like it, I am witnessing mental health issues unlike anything I’ve seen in my career. This is not me trying to be dramatic or to overplay what lockdown actually does to children. I am seeing children being diagnosed with clinical depression, increasing rates of self-harm (even in Scotland, where we already had the highest rate of self-harm in 15-year-old girls anywhere in the world, bar one), suicidal ideation and, something I haven’t seen for at least 20 years, a resurgence of eating disorders.

Add to this, those students who are displaying worrying levels of stress and anxiety; the same students that describe online learning as stress inducing. Anyone that has been involved in a Zoom meeting knows how stressful it can be and yet the great solution to our educational recovery is online learning. Well, I’m an educator and I think, at best, it’s a horribly poor substitute for in-school learning.

Right throughout this pandemic, the needs of our children seem to be at the bottom of every Government’s priority list. The cynic in me might suggest that it is because they can’t vote. Fortunately, I’m not cynical. To me, it’s actually just as worrying though to suggest that kids don’t really matter that much if they are not dying.

At the moment, there seems to be no alternative voice; no political party willing to stand up for children’s plight, no media criticism; merely, more nodding in agreement that lockdown is the only solution.

Well, just remember in our attempts to suppress a virus and ‘to save the NHS’ that the price we pay is the downward spiral in the mental well-being of our children and a legacy of under-achievement as a result. Last summer, individual children were the lowest priority in Government as seen in the examination results fiasco.

As of the 2nd January, there is not one single hospital bed available for any young person suffering from mental health issues anywhere in Scotland. The current waiting time for a mental health appointment with CAMHS in the Lothians is six months. Utterly disgraceful.

Children need to be with their friends. They need to play. They need to develop their social and academic skills. How dare we have created an environment where a 5-year-old can say, ‘I can’t play with Freddy because he’s not part of my bubble’. It is the stuff of nonsense and it is our children who will end up being this lockdown’s ‘collateral damage’.

Schools need to be OPEN and they need to open NOW.

While the US gets on with life after Trump, by abolishing from Congress all sexed terms - father, mother, daughter, son etc and with a new 'prayer' referring to the Hindu god Brahma and ending with "amen and a-women", in the interests of holding fast to the shreds of sanity New Zealand still possesses, let's reflect on last Sunday's Mystery, the Epiphany of the Lord.

And maybe your parish, like mine, is getting along atm without Father, because he's on holiday. Maybe you don't feel fed spiritually by the 'lay leader' who in Father's absence gets up at a 'para-liturgy' and gives a 'reflection'. So I offer the following from Don Marco Cannavò O.Cist.

Dear Brothers and Sisters, Fiat!

Today, the Feast of the Epiphany of the Lord, the Gospel (cf. Mt 2:1-12) presents us with three attitudes with which Christ Jesus’ coming and his manifestation to the world were welcomed. The first attitude: searching, diligent searching; the second: indifference; the third: fear.

Diligent searching: The Magi do not hesitate to set out on a journey to seek the Messiah. Arriving in Jerusalem, they ask: “Where is he who has been born king of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the East, and have come to worship him” (v. 2). They made a long journey and now with great care, they attempt to locate where the newborn King can be found. In Jerusalem, they turn to King Herod, who asks the high priests and the scribes to discover the place where the Messiah was to be born.

 

This diligent searching of the Magi contrasts with the second attitude: the indifference of the high priests and the scribes. These people are very complacent. They know the Scriptures and are able to give the correct answer on the birthplace: “in Bethlehem of Judea; for so it is written by the prophet” (v. 5); they know, but they do not go out of their way to visit the Messiah. And Bethlehem is a few kilometres away, but they don’t budge.

 

Even more negative is the third attitude, that of Herod: fear. He is afraid that that Child will take away his power. He summons the Magi and has them tell him when the star appeared to them and he sends them to Bethlehem saying: “Go and search diligently for the child and when you have found him, bring me word, that I too may come and worship him” (v. 8).

 

In reality, Herod does not want to go to worship Jesus; Herod wants to know where the child is — not to adore Him — but to eliminate Him, because he considers Him a rival. And listen carefully: fear always leads to hypocrisy. Hypocrites are like this because their hearts are filled with fear.

 

These are the three attitudes that we find in the Gospel: the diligent searching of the Magi; the indifference of the high priests and the scribes, of those familiar with theology; and the fear of Herod. And we too can think and choose which of the three to assume. Do I wish to diligently search for Jesus? “But Jesus means nothing to me… I have peace of mind…”. Or, do I fear Jesus and want to eliminate him from my heart?

 

Selfishness can lead us to consider Jesus’ coming into our life as a threat. Thus we try to suppress or to silence Jesus’ message. When we follow human ambitions, the most comfortable prospects, tendencies toward evil, Jesus is perceived as an obstacle.

On the other hand, the temptation of indifference is also always present. Even though we know that Jesus is the Saviour — ours, of us all — we prefer to live as if he were not: instead of behaving in coherence with our own Christian faith, we follow worldly principles that entice us to satisfy tendencies toward arrogance, toward thirsting for power, toward riches.

 

We are instead called to follow the example of the Magi: to be diligent in searching, prepared to go out of our way to encounter Jesus in our lives. Seeking him in order to adore him, to acknowledge that he is our Lord, the One who reveals the true path to be followed. If we have this attitude, Jesus truly saves us, and we can live a fine life; we can grow in faith, in hope, in charity toward God and toward our brothers and sisters.

 

In her diary, on January 6, 1901, Luisa says that as she was "outside of herself", she seemed to see the moment when the holy Magi arrived at the grotto of Bethlehem. As they arrived in the presence of the Baby, He was pleased to let the rays of His Divinity shine externally, communicating Himself to the Magi in three ways - through love, through beauty and through power – in such a way that they remained enraptured and engrossed in the presence of Little Baby Jesus; so much so, that if the Lord had not withdrawn again the rays of His Divinity internally, they would have remained there forever, unable to move any more.

 

Then, as the Baby withdrew His Divinity, the holy Magi returned into themselves; they stirred themselves, stupefied, in seeing an excess of love so great, because through that light the Lord had let them understand the mystery of the Incarnation. Then they stood up and offered their gifts to the Queen Mother, and She spoke with them at length. She inculcated into them, strongly, not only their own salvation, but also taking to heart the salvation of their peoples, with no fear even to lay down their lives to obtain the intent.

 

After that, Luisa withdrew into herself and she found herself together with Jesus. He wanted her to tell Him something, but she saw herself so bad and confused that she would not dare to tell Him anything. Seeing that Luisa was not saying anything, Jesus Himself continued to speak about the holy Magi, telling her that by having communicated Himself to the Magi in three ways, He obtained for them three effects, because He never communicate Himself to souls uselessly; rather, they always receive some profit for themselves. So, as Jesus communicated Himself through love, they obtained detachment from themselves; through beauty, they obtained contempt of earthly things; and through power, their hearts remained all bound to Jesus, and they obtained the bravery to lay down their blood and life for Him.

 

Let us also rejoice because God reveals to us the true light, Christ, the Savior King, in so many ways. He always, in His mercy, watches over those who walk guided by a star. Once again, we feel within us profound gratitude to Mary, the Mother of Jesus. She is the perfect image of the Church which gives the light of Christ to the world: she is the Star of evangelization.

 

Blessed Virgin Mary Queen of Heaven and  Queen of the Divine Will

 

"Respice Stellam," St Bernard says to us: look to the Star, you who go in search of truth and peace; turn your gaze to Mary, and she will show you Jesus, light for every person and for all peoples.
