By now it's past obvious that the Traditional Latin Mass which fed and fostered the saints for centuries has become a severe embarrassment to the conciliar, counterfeit establishment in Rome. The holy truth of its texts shows up the 'New Mass' for what it is: a liturgy fabricated by a committee in such a hurry it was written in part on a paper napkin, in a cafe. And no one will be surprised to hear that the demise of the TLM is being expedited by a priest of the once-illustrious Society of Jesus (Jesuits).
Who would ever have supposed that the saints of the Church were "strangers or silent spectators" at Holy Mass, the source and summit of their Christian life and sanctity? It sounds bizarre and it is, but that is the suggestion made by 'Pope Leo XIV' at his General Audience on Wednesday. Maybe the saints were exceptions to the rule: maybe for centuries most Catholics thought it was enough just to show up on Sunday and be there, thus necessitating the reformed liturgy of the Second Vatican Council - the Novus Ordo Missae.
What's curious about Leo's criticism of the Traditional Latin Mass is that it was heralded on the very same day by the notorious modernist Jesuit Fr Thomas Reese, in a column titled "Why I Hate the Latin Mass". Reese - once forced to resign as editor of the Jesuit magazine America by Cardinal Josef Ratzinger - referred to the Latin Mass as "a zombie. We thought it was dead but it keeps coming back."
Imagine what might have happened to Reese if he'd written a piece titled "Why I Hate the Novus Ordo Missae". At the very least his fellow Jesuits would have disowned him. He could have lost his priestly faculties.
Traditional commentator Hilary White points out that the liturgy is theology embodied. "If a man admits he "hates" the old form of the liturgy, he is saying outright that he "hates" the religion it manifested. He's straight-up admitting the Pauline Rite embodies a different, new, antiCatholic religion."

Leo and Reese are sailing close to the wind; it sounds very much as though their criticism of the Sacrifice of Calvary, the Mass, is an incentive to impiety ('impiety' meaning an act against the reverence due to God, or to a person or thing referring to God). "Anyone who says that the ceremonies, vestments or outward signs used by the Church in the celebration of Masses are incentives to impiety, let him be anathema"(Council of Trent).
“The liturgical reform promoted by the Second Vatican Council is thus firmly rooted in the living tradition of the Church”, Leo pontificated (using that expression loosely, you understand). "Thus"? Pardon me? The accomplished liturgical scholar Dom Alcuin Reid states the obvious: that Leo had advanced no evidence to prove that the reform was any such thing. Reid opines that Leo's text would have been returned by an examiner in any reputable faculty as "unsatisfactory". Ouch.
Reid excuses Leo on the grounds that it was a supplied text. But in that case any pope worthy of the name would have read it through before solemnly pronouncing it and creating the controversy that it did. But he could have written it himself. It sounds anodyne enough. Dom Reid called it "pedestrian". (Acknowledging Anthony Stine, "Return to Tradition").
No 'pope' - no one at all - may ever abrogate the Latin Mass, "the most beautiful thing this side of heaven". Leo and his conspirators in the Vatican know this, so they must invent reasons (talking points from the '70s trotted out by Leo at his audience) to persuade the Church to accept its substitution by a Latin Mass almost indistinguishable from the Novus Ordo. Discerning Catholics might catch a whiff of the diabolical source of such cunning in its proponents, such as Thomas Reese SJ.
Thomas Reese, SJ on X: 'this Transgender History Month pray to saints who defied gender norms" https://www.ncronline.org/opinion/guest-voices/transgender-history-month-pray-trans-catholic-saints
Fr Reese posted a gender queer pervert’s claim - “Catholics celebrate “transgender month in August” - on the first anniversary of the transgender who killed two Catholic school children and seriously injured 24 others at Annunciation in Minnesota, US.
Guilt by association is a thing, and no one could suppose the scoundrels in the Vatican are implicated in the disobedience to God's perfect ordering of the sexes evidenced by Fr Reese. But that disobedience mirrors the diabolical hatred of the Traditional Latin Mass he shares with Rome. Rome, where they no longer believe in the devil but in psychological constructs, and replace Christ Our Lord with human solutions.
Leo XIV has once again dashed the (false) hopes of conservatives and semi-trads who allowed their imaginations after the 2025 conclave to convince them that if they just “zipped it” enough on his many erroneous statements he might just reward them with more Traditional Latin Masses (TLM).
Leo’s catechesis on Sacrosanctum Concilium Wednesday should be a sobering moment for the reality-denying crowd. Far from suggesting a “liberation” of the TLM, Leo once again pointed in the opposite direction.
Doubling down on the Novus Ordo
In his remarks, Leo not only defended the legitimacy of the post-conciliar reforms but also presented them as the natural continuation of the Church’s liturgical tradition and, as such, something that should be normative going forward.
Among other things, Leo described the Council’s revision of the liturgical books as necessary and, citing Sacrosanctum Concilium, explained that Vatican II wanted the rites arranged so that “the Christian people, so far as possible, should be enabled to understand them with ease” in order to participate in them “fully, actively.”

After referencing “St. Paul VI,” Leo stated, unequivocally, that, “The liturgical reform promoted by the Second Vatican Council is thus firmly rooted in the living tradition of the Church.”
In saying such this just weeks after Cardinal Arthur Roche publicly remarked that he would not do away with Traditiones custodes, Leo has clearly planted his flag on the side of those who are striving to do away with the Latin Mass and integrate it with the Novus Ordo.
Elsewhere in his audience, Leo attempted to lend legitimacy to his conclusion by pointing to Pius XI and the reforms of Pius XII and John XXIII, describing the Council as continuing an existing trajectory of the reforms they put into motion.
Leo's official newspaper: "the real devil is misogyny"
Of course, the adjustments to the liturgical and prayer life of the Church made by pre-conciliar popes were nowhere near the drastic “reforms” rigidly enforced by Annibale Bugnini and Paul VI in the postconciliar years. Regardless, for Leo, the matter is settled: the Novus Ordo developed organically, and therefore there is no need to return to the TLM, or to make allowances for it.
The mere fact that Leo has not only said nothing praiseworthy about the Latin Mass at this stage in his reign but has repeatedly allowed his appointees to continually attack it should indicate to everyone what his true position on the matter is.
In brief, for Leo and others, the Traditional Latin Mass is not the pinnacle of authentic liturgical development that occurred over centuries, but rather a blip on the screen that Vatican II legitimately revised and ultimately moved beyond.
Trad Inc. leaps into action
Just hours after Leo’s speech, Vatican reporter Diane Montagna published an essay by Dom Alcuin Reed on her Substack blog. Clearly timed to counter Leo’s remarks, Montagna’s post blamed Leo’s speechwriters for his remarks, instead of him. “Drafters of Pope Leo’s Wednesday catechesis did not serve him well today, accomplished liturgical scholar contends,” she wrote.
Influencer Taylor Marshall also released a podcast Wednesday. Instead of drawing attention the more troubling aspects of Leo’s remarks, he papered over them by focusing on the meaning of “active participation.” This failure to tell the truth about Leo’s comments contradicts past remarks Marshall made about Sacrosanctum Concilium under Francis. The discrepancy was noted a video montage by satirist Michael Naaden, who goes by the name Sede Picante on X.

On Thursday, Vatican reporter Nico Spuntoni released an interview with conservative Cardinal Robert Sarah, who rightly denounced Traditionis custodes while maintaining that the Church “cannot wage war against those who devoutly participate in Mass simply because they prefer one form over another.”
The goal of the interview, of course, is to shift the narrative so conservatives and traditionalists won’t give up hoping that Leo will one day come around to his senses.
Jesuit Thomas Reese weighs in
Just how deeply — and how resentfully — the TLM is viewed as a relic of the past to which the Church should never again return was underscored by notorious modernist Thomas Reese, a Jesuit priest who penned a column one day before Leo’s remarks entitled, “Why I Hate the Old Latin Mass.”
Even though Reese, a longtime critic of traditional Catholic positions, presented his argument “humorously,” its vehement hostility toward the Latin liturgy was loud and clear.
A Novus Ordo Mass
Despite trying to soften the blow by claiming that he doesn’t hate those who attend the TLM, Reese’s essay is, in fact, deeply hostile to them. Sadly, his comments likely reflect the majority sentiment of the hierarchy and act as the more honest version of Leo’s Wednesday catechesis.
One of Reese’s opening claims is that “the old Latin Mass is like a zombie” in that it “keeps coming back.” He then expresses perplexity about the language issue. “We thought it would fade away or people would be satisfied with going to a Latin version of the new liturgy. Not so.”
One cannot help but be reminded of Leo XIV’s interview last year with Crux. At the time, Leo revealingly said: “Well, you can say the Latin Mass right now. If it is the rite of Vatican II, the Mass of Paul VI, there is no problem.”
Reese then attacked what he calls “the ideologues who say the new Mass is blasphemous and who reject the teachings of the Second Vatican Council on things like ecumenism, social justice and the role of the laity in the church.” This is simply another crude caricature of how Traditional Catholics are viewed by the hierarchy; Reese is just saying it out loud.
His caricaturization does little to neutralize the legitimate arguments about the dangers of the Novus Ordo Missae and the deplorable false religion that flowed from Vatican II.
In a highly ironic moment, considering that the Jesuits have become the poster boys for wayward disobedience, Reese tries to gaslight Traditional Catholics by claiming that during his Jesuit novitiate in 1962, when the Church changed the liturgy, “we saluted and did it without questions” because “obedience was the most important virtue in the old church.” Clearly, obedience is no longer a virtue in the new “church” Reese so enthusiastically defends.
Diocese of Mallorca, Assumption Mass
The gaslighting became even more explicit when Reese declared that “If they want to be traditionalists, they should be obedient to the council and the popes who have promoted the liturgy in the vernacular.”
This statement serves as a definition of a dead tradition, as it makes the assumption that being a “traditionalist” simply means obeying whatever diabolical garbage the ecclesial squatters in Rome are promoting.
There is no need to morbidly dissect Reese’s whole article, though it would make a good, severe penance. Suffice it to say that it is a grittier and more honest reflection of the general sentiment of the synodal hierarchy, albeit in bad taste.
Whether wrapped in the sanctimonious language of Leo’s catechesis on Sacrosanctum Concilium, or in Reese’s vulgar expression of hatred disguised as humor, the message remains the same: there is no place for the Mass of the Ages in the Synodal Church.https://integritymagazine.org/2026/08/27/leo-dashes-hopes-of-trad-inc-while-leftist-jesuit-professes-hatred-for-the-latin-m

The Pope's arguments are as Fake as the Facade with which they are constructing the New Synodal Ape of the Church. Jesus is the Way, the Truth, and the Life, none of which are apparent when Pope Leo XIV speaks. We must Pray and Watch with the Mystical Body of Christ as it goes through its Agony and Passion. We must not sleep.

ReplyDeleteYeah so good church attendance plummeted 90% ,vocations 90%
Belief in the real presence in the Eucharist down to 50% or less .
While the Tridentine mass is packed with young people , traditionalist ordinations such as the FSSP ,SSPX , are skyrocketing, yet the Vatican wants to stamp it out you must ask why .
Why doesn't Rome trust the holy spirit, if the ancient mass was not the will of our Lord it would die on the vine without the need to repress it.
Why not have both the Novus Ordo and the TLM and let the holy spirit decide ?
I assume it's because those modernists want a transformative new theology that is incomparable with the direction they want to take the church if I am wrong then why suppress the TLM when it's growing among the young?
ReplyDeleteThe worrying thing here is that “the Spirit” seems to be an after-the-event justification for a decision that has *already* been taken and implemented. I’m not sure the Holy Spirit necessarily moves retrospectively (or indeed retroactively).
ReplyDeleteMy mother has just got back from volunteering in Spain at a hostel on the Camino Santiago. There is a former abbey church not far from where she was working, where there is one priest serving TWENTY parishes. Where have all the vocations gone????

Yours is the authentic Catholic stance on this subject. We are to accept the validity of all Catholic liturgical rites.

ReplyDeleteThe OP is mistaken, stubbornly so. No Pope can handcuff a future pope regarding the liturgy. To say that theTLM cannot be abrogated is poppycock.
All popes are the supreme authoriies during their respective pontificates. Making this point may not convince an OP who happens to be a sede, but might convince someone who wishes to avoid becoming a schismatic to look into official Catholic understanding of the scope of papal authority.
DeleteRonald Burke In Quo Primum, Pope St. Pius V declared that the Traditional Latin Mass must never be changed or replaced. He bound the entire Church — including all future true popes — to this decree “in perpetuity” (forever).

Julia du Fresne yep
ReplyDeleteOh please people, what is wrong with you. The Second Vatican Council approved this change. Why can’t you accept this instead trying to tear the Church apart. Does Jesus really care if we worship Him in Latin or our own languages. Lord have mercy on Catholics for destroying our church from within 😢
DeleteBecky Kelley The Latin language is absolutely not the issue. The issue is the truths of the Catholic religion which the Traditional Latin Mass sets forth for the faithful, and which are shown by statistics in Mass attendance and reception of the Sacraments to have been tragically undermined by the Second Vatican Council.

Lucifer worship via the exsultet.

ReplyDeleteMatthew 16:19. "I will give you the keys to Heaven" and Matthew 18:18 "what you bind on earth is bound in heaven and what you're loose on earth will be loosed in heaven". Can it be anymore clearer that Pope Leo 14th has the apostolic authority for implementing rules and making changes that will best address for the times Jesus' command to love one another as I have loved you and to evangelize the Word. Your post is a continuous desperate effort to give legitimacy to SSPX. They are so confused that they say the Pope is illegitimate yet appeals to the same Pope regarding their excommunication. SSPX should appoint their own Pope and un-excommunicate themselves. Take Pope Leo 14th out of your mouths and find another way to get attention rather than bad- mouthing Pope Leo. You are old news
DeleteCynthia Teves-Ruehlig I suppose you realise there have been many antipopes in the history of the Church? Those men usurped the See of Peter in spite of the words of Our Lord Jesus Christ recorded in Scripture, as Leo/Prevost and Francis/Bergoglio have done.
gree that the SSPX are mistaken, but the Society does NOT say Leo is illegitimate. They are mistaken in that they appeal to his authority while denying the facts of his heresies which prove that he has none.
Yes, this is 'old news' - which must be repeated, ad nauseam, until Catholics accept the unpalatable truth.
ReplyDeleteIt pains me that those who consider themselves devout Catholics do not accept guidance approved by the college of Cardinals under the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Do you REALY think the outcome could be erroneous? God is in control.
DeleteFrank Napoli the College of Cardinals is not infallible.
ReplyDeleteI find this obsession with one way of performing liturgy in the history of Christianity fascinating. Even more so, the idea that it is the end all and be all. These people forget that there were other things before the Latin liturgy! The very early church celebrated the liturgy under other formats. This obsession is oh so intriguing.

DeleteTony Lewis the point, surely, is that the Latin Mass liturgy has been infallibly promulgated by the Church.
In 1570 Pope St. Pius V issued a solemn apostolic constitution, Quo Primum Tempore, following the Council of Trent. This decree firmly established what is now known as the Traditional Latin Mass (TLM), also called the Tridentine Mass. More importantly, the pope declared that this form of the Mass must remain unchanged and universally binding "in perpetuity" — that is, forever.
ReplyDeleteAll the existing cardinals are Francis mini-me's. He made sure he stacked the college with like thinking men so his thoughts and beliefs will continue.
ReplyDeleteThe Modernists like Leo are obsessed with their Novus Ordo Mass. Can't they see that as a result of the new Mass Catholics voted with their feet and now only 25 percent attend Sunday Mass. The bishops and Pope just are incapable of admitting that their big project was and is a failure.
